The Sports Medicine Division at Hardin-Simmons is one of the best in all of Division III athletics and is committed to providing the best possible medical care to HSU’s student-athletes through “Caring for Champions”. It is the desire of the Athletic Training staff to promote an atmosphere of excellence in both the classroom and in competition.

The Sports Medicine staff is comprised of State Licensed and Nationally Certified athletic trainers and delivers quality health care to all 450 student-athletes. The care provided by the staff includes a multitude of services to HSU student-athletes, primarily focusing on the prevention, assessment, management, treatment, rehabilitation and education of athletic related injuries and conditions. Specific emphasis is placed on therapeutic exercise in the treatment of athletic injuries and the student-athletes return to play. The Sports Medicine staff is also responsible for preparing student-athletes for daily practice, weekly competitions and contests as well scheduling medical referrals to HSU Team Physicians. Daily treatment and rehabilitation take place in one of the three athletic training rooms located on the HSU campus in the Jake Sandefer Fieldhouse, Mabee Athletic Complex, and the New Grape Street Athletic Complex.

Working hand in hand with the Division of Sports Medicine is the Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). The ATEP prepares athletic training majors for a future in athletic training and sports medicine. Throughout an athletic training students time in the ATEP he/she will have the opportunities to gain valuable sports medicine clinical experience at all three HSU clinical sites, and will enjoy additional clinical rotational sites at Abilene Sports Medicine and Orthopedics, West Texas Rehab Sports Center, Abilene Wylie High School and Abilene Cooper High School. Current graduates of the HSU ATEP have gained employment throughout the country in various high schools, clinics and universities. Students interested in majoring in athletic training and gaining acceptance into the ATEP are encouraged to visit the Athletic Training Education Program website.
