D.J. Gililland Jr., MSEd.,
ATC, LAT
Head Athletic Trainer/Adjunct Instructor of Athletic
Training
Gililland assumed the Head Athletic Trainer position in June of
2006 after serving four years as an assistant at HSU. He holds the
National Athletic Training Association Board of Certification
– Certified Athletic Trainer, and is a Licensed Athletic
Trainer through the Texas Department of Health. A native of White
Deer, Texas; Gililland’s responsibilities include serving as
the administrator for the Sports Medicine Division, insurance
coordinator, clinical instructor to ATEP athletic training students
and providing athletic training care for football, men’s
basketball, and golf.
Gililland is a 1998 graduate of HSU with a Bachelor of Behavioral
Science degree in All-Level Physical Education and a 2000 graduate
of Northwest Missouri State University, earning a Master’s of
Science in Education Degree. Prior to his return to HSU in 2002, he
served for two years as the Head Athletic Trainer/Clinical Director
of Sports Medicine at Missouri Baptist University in St. Louis,
Missouri.
Gililland is actively involved in the profession of athletic
training and holds membership with the National Athletic Trainers
Association, The Southwest Athletic Trainers Association, and The
College Athletic Trainers Society. He has served on both national
and district committees and currently is the website committee
chair for the Southwest Athletic Trainers Association.
In addition to his involvement within the profession, Gililland
stays active within the campus and community serving as a volunteer
and member of the Leadership Board of Directors for the Big Country
Fellowship of Christian Athletes, as well serving in various
capacities at South Side Baptist Church in Abilene.
He is married to the former Andrea Daniel of San Antonio,
Texas.
Bertha De La Garza, MS, ATC, LAT, CSCS
Assistant Athletic Trainer/Adjunct Instructor Athletic
Training
Bertha (Bert) De La Garza joined the HSU Sports Medicine staff in
the summer of 2007. Bert holds the National Athletic Training
Association Board of Certification – Certified Athletic
Trainer, Licensed Athletic Trainer through the Texas Department of
Health, and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist
through the National Strength Coaches Association. She came to HSU
after a five year stint as a high school athletic trainer in South
Texas. She oversees the Grape Street Athletic Training Center and
provides athletic training coverage to Men’s/Women’s
Soccer and softball and serves as a clinical/classroom instructor
in the ATEP.
De La Garza graduated with her Bachelor’s Degree from
Southwest Texas State University in 1998 and completed the NATA
Internship athletic training program at Texas Lutheran in 2000. She
earned a Masters Degree in Athletic Training from Indian State
University. De La Garza holds membership with the National Athletic
Trainers Association, and The Southwest Athletic Trainers
Association. She serves as the moderator and emcee for the South
Padre Athletic Trainer Society annual meeting at South Padre,
Texas.

Assistant Athletic Trainer/ Clinical Supervisor of Athletic
Training Student
Green joined the HSU Sports Medicine Staff as a full-time employee
in the summer of 2010, after serving as a graduate assistant in the
program for two years.
