Cowboy Bats Come Alive In Split With Texas-Tyler

TYLER, Texas — It was just a matter of
time before the Hardin-Simmons’ baseball bats came alive and
it finally happened in the second game of its doubleheader with
Texas-Tyler as the Cowboys pounded out 23 hits in a 22-5 win to
salvage a split with the Patriots after a 5-1 loss in the opener
Saturday afternoon at Irwin Field.
The Cowboys scored nine runs in the first inning of the second
game. Courtney Harris had an RBI single, Blake Sieck had a two-run
single, Jordan Dotson had an RBI single, Brian Weeks had an RBI
single, LeJuan Edwards had an RBI single, and Taylor Berlin had an
RBI single. Weeks scored two runs in the inning. HSU had six hits
and took advantage of three walks and a hit batsmen in the
inning.
Freshman Jay Hiller had an RBI single and Andrew Rehling had an RBI
double in the third to make it 11-1. Hiller added an RBI single and
Sieck had a sacrifice fly in the fifth to make it 13-1. UTT scored
three runs in the fifth inning.
HSU added three runs in the sixth on a Berlin sacrifice fly and
Harris hit a two-run homer. It was the first home run of the year
for the Cowboys.
Cowboy starter Sam Walker (2-1) worked into the sixth and allowed
seven hits and four earned runs. Freshman Cody Sillivent came on
and worked two and a third innings of scoreless relief and freshman
Tyler Brunnemann worked a scoreless ninth. The two relievers did
not allow a hit.
Berlin added a two-run double in the eighth and Michael Morgan had
an RBI double. Brian Weeks added an RBI single. Morgan added an RBI
single in the ninth.
Berlin had four hits and drove in four and Edwards had three hits,
three RBIs and scored five times. Sieck had three RBIs and Weeks
scored twice and drove in two runs and had three hits.
In the first game, UTT scored a single run in the second and Weeks
tied the game in the third with an RBI single. It remained that way
until the fifth, when UTT went to the small ball to score four
times. The Patriots loaded the bases with a pair of bunt singles
and a walk. Then Cody Jones drove in two runs with a double and
Nathan Skeen and Corey Henderson had sacrifice flies.
Tim Kriegel took the loss for the Cowboys allowing 10 hits and five
runs in four innings. Skyler Sillivent and Joe Roberson each had a
scoreless inning of relief and neither allowed a hit. Rehling had
two hits to pace the offense.
HSU is now 2-5 on the year and UTT is 6-5. The teams will conclude
the series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
