Cowboys Drop Series Opener

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped a 5-3 game to Texas Lutheran in the first game of a three-game American Southwest Conference series at Hunter Field.

Both teams received solid pitching from their starters, but TLU came up with five two-out runs to beat the Cowboys.

HSU scored a run in the first when LeJuan Edwards singled and moved to second on a Jay Hiller sac bunt. Taylor Berlin hit a ball that Daniel Yancelson misplayed allowing a run to score.

Isaac Tijerina had a solo home run in the second for TLU and in the third Cody Miller had a two-out RBI single to make it 2-1. The Bulldogs scored three unearned runs in the fifth to take a 5-1. Evan Curtis had a two-out two-run single and another run scored on a wild pitch.

Brad Orosey shut the Cowboys down on two hits through six inning. HSU had a chance in the seventh with runners on first and second and one out but Jon Finney hit into a double play. In the eighth the Cowboys loaded the bases again, but Orosey got Troy Tarrant on a looking third strike.

In the ninth Cody Jarboe had a one-out single and Eric Zamora walked, Edwards then hit a double to left to score both runners but he was thrown out trying to advance to third to end the game.

Orosey went the distance and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits to improve to 2-1 on the year. Sam Walker scattered 11 hits in seven and two-third innings and he allowed five runs (two earned) to fall to 5-3 on the year.

Edwards had three hits and Jarboe added two for the Cowboys and Yancelson had three hits for TLU.

HSU is now 25-9 on the year and 12-4 in ASC West play. The Cowboys are tied for the ASC West lead with Concordia, who beat Schreiner on Friday. TLU improved to 20-15 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
