ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped a 5-3 game to Texas Lutheran in the first game of a three-game American Southwest Conference series at Hunter Field.
Both teams received solid pitching from their starters, but TLU came up with five two-out runs to beat the Cowboys.
Isaac Tijerina had a solo home run in the second for TLU and in the third Cody Miller had a two-out RBI single to make it 2-1. The Bulldogs scored three unearned runs in the fifth to take a 5-1. Evan Curtis had a two-out two-run single and another run scored on a wild pitch.
Brad Orosey shut the Cowboys down on two hits through six inning. HSU had a chance in the seventh with runners on first and second and one out but Jon Finney hit into a double play. In the eighth the Cowboys loaded the bases again, but Orosey got Troy Tarrant on a looking third strike.
Orosey went the distance and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits to improve to 2-1 on the year. Sam Walker scattered 11 hits in seven and two-third innings and he allowed five runs (two earned) to fall to 5-3 on the year.
Edwards had three hits and Jarboe added two for the Cowboys and Yancelson had three hits for TLU.
HSU is now 25-9 on the year and 12-4 in ASC West play. The Cowboys are tied for the ASC West lead with Concordia, who beat Schreiner on Friday. TLU improved to 20-15 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
The teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
