Cowboys Lose At Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons lost 5-2 to Sul Ross State to drop its American Southwest Conference opening series two games to one on Monday afternoon at Kokernot Field.

HSU jumped to an early 2-0 lead on RBI fielder's choices by Brian Blare and Troy Tarrant. The Lobos answered with a three-run triple by Chris Rubio in the bottom of the first. 

The only runs in the game came in the fifth inning, when the Lobos scored a pair of runs on a throwing error by Cowboy starter Eric Zamora. Zamora had walked Dakota Dill and Brian Mata, both on 3-2 pitches. Andy Silcox then put down a bunt that Zamora fielded and threw to third but the throw went up the line and all the into the corner scoring two runs.

Tyler Brunnemann came in and got out of the jam but the Cowboys did not have runner past first base after the fourth inning.

Luke Fry (4-1) went the distance for Sul Ross State. He scattered nine hits and struck out nine and allowed one earned run.

Zamora (0-2) went four plus innings for the Cowboys and took the loss. He allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits. Brunnemann came in and worked four scoreless innings and struck out five.

Marcus Uechi and Jay Hiller had two hits each for the Cowboys and Mike Apodaca had three hits to pace Sul Ross State.

The Cowboys are now 7-8 on the year and 1-2 in ASC play. Sul Ross State is 6-15 and 2-1 in league play. HSU continues ASC play on Friday at defending league champion Concordia.
