How Sweep It Is

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons allowed 11 runs in the top of the first inning of the first game, but rallied to outscore McMurry 35-4 the rest of the day and swept an American Southwest Conference baseball doubleheader 17-13 and 18-2 on Friday afternoon at Hunter Field.  

After winning the opening game Thursday night 15-4, McMurry came out swinging in game two of the series and scored 11 runs on 10 hits in the first inning of game one. Dylan DeLean had an BI double, Matt Thompson had a two-run home run, Bradd Baker had an RBI double, Korey Moench had an RBI single, Nick Marsh had a two-run single that chased starter Eric Zamora. DeLeon added a two-run double, Thompson had an RBI triple and Connor Griffith had an RBI single in the inning.

 

HSU responded with seven runs in the first. Jay Hiller had an RBI double, Andrew Rehling had an RBI single, Jon Finney had an RBI single, Joey Dearing had a two-run single Marcus Uechi added a two-run double to chase starter Jacob Dentoni.  

The Cowboys took the lead in the second inning with five more runs. Troy Nicholson and Finney had RBI singles and Dearing had an RBI fielder's choice. Hiller added a sacrifice fly and Troy Tarrant had a sacrifice fly. 

McMurry retook the lead in the third with a Marcellour Biggins fielder's choice and a Griffith RBI single. James Simmons came on and shut the door on McMurry the rest of the game. He worked four and two-third innings of scoreless relief to improve to 4-1. 

HSU took the lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Joey Dearing and a throw got away allowing a third run to score on the play. HSU added two more runs in the sixth on a Rehling RBI single and a RBI double by Nicholson. 

Rehling, Nicholson and Finney each had three hits for the Cowboys. Dearing had two hits and drove in his first five runs of the year in the game for HSU. De Leon, Thompson and Griffith had three hits each for McMurry.  

In game two, McMurry scored two runs in the first and HSU responded by scoring in every inning en route to the 18-2 run-rule win.

 

Andrew Bell had a two-run single in the first and it was all McMurry would get off Stewart Person (3-2) who went the distance, scattering seven hits. Zach Matthys took the loss for McMurry.  

Hiller and Rehling had RBI singles in the first and HSU took the lead for good in the second inning with two runs. Uechi had a sacrifice fly and Hiller had an RBI single.  HSU scored four times in the third. Chris Matthews had an RBI single, Dearing had a two-run single and Tarrant had a sacrifice fly.

 

Nicholson had an RBI double in the fourth and Tarrant had a long solo home run in the fifth.  

HSU had an eight-run sixth inning. Finney had an RBI fielder's choice and Hiller had a two-run double. Rehling was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Nicholson had a two-run single to right. HSU scored two more runs on wild pitches. 

Jacob Bermejo and Marsh had two hits each for McMurry and Hiller and Nicholson had three hits each. Hiller drove in four runs and Nicholson three. 

HSU is now 15-14 on the year and 8-7 in ASC West play, good for fourth place. McMurry fell to third place in the ASC West at 11-4 in league play and 17-16 overall. The Cowboys host Tarleton State on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
