GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell 14-3 to Willamette in the second day of the Jackie Moore/Rusty Greer Classic at AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie on a frigid Saturday evening.
Willamette scored a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Connor Bailey had an RBI single in the first and Brendan Natuzzi scored on a wild pitch. Perry Van Eckhardt had a sacrifice fly in the second inning and another run scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
HSU scored in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Garrett Buckner. Buckner added an RBI single in the sixth inning and HSU scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.
HSU allowed 11 walks and hit two batters in the game but also struck out 11 batters.
Van Eckhardt drove in four runs and Tyler Janitz and Connor Bailey had two hits each for the Bearcats.
Brandon Nelson earned the win on the mound to improve to 1-1 on the season. He worked six innings and allowed just one earned run.
Taylor McMackin took the loss for the Cowboys in his HSU debut. He allowed just three hits over four innings but four walks led to four earned runs. He also struck out six. He was the first of seven HSU pitchers in the game.
HSU is now 1-1 on the season and the Bearcats are now 3-3. HSU will play LeTourneau at 1 p.m. Sunday to close out the Classic.
