SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team dropped the first game of a three-game non-conference series, 7-2, at Texas Lutheran on Thursday night at Katt-Isbell Field in Seguin.
TLU opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Spencer Brandt and Eric Rabinowitz had back-to-back RBI doubles.
The Cowboys cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third inning on an RBI double by Taylor Cooling. TLU made it 3-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly by Matthew Lemon.
HSU cut the deficit to 3-2 in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Elijah Perez. TLU added a single run in the seventh and Riley Schaefer added a three-run home run in the eighth for TLU.
Ty Engelhardt was solid for the Cowboys allowing three runs (two earned) over six innings of work to fall to 1-1 on the year. He struck out six batters and allowed seven hits. Hayden Clark, Eric Denby, Brady Roper and Jesse Martin all worked out of the HSU bullpen.
Perez and Hunter Garrison led the Cowboys with two hits each. Schaefer led TLU with four hits and scored three runs and drove in three.
Dylan Drgac went six and two-third innings and allowed just two runs and six hits and struck out 10. Drew Waller worked the final two and one-third innings for the save.
HSU is now 1-3 on the year and TLU improved to 7-0. The two teams will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Friday.
