ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team split a doubleheader with Texas-Tyler on Saturday afternoon at Hunter Field falling 14-5 before responding in the second game to take the American Southwest Conference series with an 11-6 win.
The Patriots jumped out to a 4-0 lead with three runs in the first on a two-run triple by Ben Romines and a Bowie Ferris RBI single in the first and a pair of errors led to a run in the second.
The Patriots added a run in the fourth and exploded for nine runs in the seventh inning.
Simon Sedillo took the win with four and two-third innings of five-hit ball. He allowed two earned runs to improve to 2-1 on the Year. Sam Sitton and Chris Stodolka worked out of the bullpen for the Patriots.
Taylor McMackin took the loss as he allowed four runs over two and two-third innings. Garrett Buckner worked two and two-third innings of hitless relief. Jesse Martin, Justin Adams and Garrett Lloyd all worked in the game for HSU.
Bradshaw led the Cowboys with two hits and Blake Wilson led the Patriots with three hits.
The Cowboys' offense exploded for 17 hits in the second game.
UT-Tyler scored in the first inning off a Garrett Welch RBI single and HSU tied the game in the third inning on a Bradshaw single.
HSU then exploded for nine runs over the fifth and sixth innings. Perez had an RBI single in the fifth and Bradshaw followed that with a two-run home run to right. Hunter Garrison added an RBI single.
Chandler Carter was cruising into the seventh inning as he had retired 10 in a row. Alex Bishop and Blake Maddox opened the inning with solo home runs. Two more batters reached and then Eric Denby came in for Carter. Welch then had a three-run double to cut the deficit to 10-6.
HSU added an insurance run in the eighth inning on a Cooling sacrifice fly.
Carter improved to 2-3 in an outing that was better than the final line indicated. He allowed five runs on six hits over six and one-third innings. He cruised through the middle part of the game. Denby got one out and Hayden Day came on in a non-save situation in the seventh and got the final out of the inning and then worked two more scoreless innings.
Brandon Saddler took the loss for the Patriots as he was the first of seven pitchers in the contest.
Bradshaw, Perez and Garrison had three hits for the Cowboys and Bradshaw drove in five runs. Welch had three hits and drove in four runs for the Patriots.
HSU is now 7-9 overall and 5-4 in ASC action. UT-Tyler is 10-7 overall and 2-4 in league play. The Cowboys will play a non-conference game at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Howard Payne.
