Cowboys Drop Series Opener To Tarleton State

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' baseball fell 6-4 to Tarleton State on Friday night at Hunter Field.

Tarleton broke open a scoreless game with three runs in the fourth inning. Jake Hasbrouck had a two-run double and Dylan Lemons had an RBI single.

HSU answered with two runs in the fourth on RBI groundouts by John Tople and Cody Berryman. Taylor Cooling also had the 50th double of his career in the inning to set the new HSU record.

TSU added an RBI double by Jared McCarver in the fifth inning and tacked on a pair of runs in the ninth on RBI singles by Elvin Alamo and Blake Adams.

HSU picked up a pair of runs in the ninth innings on an RBI double by Elijah Perez and an RBI groundout by Tyler Bradshaw.

Hunter Hudson, Fransisco Rodriguez McCarver and Hasbrouck had two hits each for the Texans. Evan Pontley (4-2) worked into the ninth inning and allowed four runs on nine hits. Eddie Avila worked the final two outs for his fourth save.  

Cooling, Dylan Sweeney and Berryman led the Cowboys with two hits. Ty Englehardt started and went eight innings for the Cowboys. He allowed four runs on nine hits to fall to 1-3. Gunny Evans worked the ninth inning.

The Cowboys are now 7-11 on the year and Tarleton improved to 13-9. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Stephenville. That could be moved back to Abilene if expected rain hits the Stephenville area.
