ABILENE, Texas - HSU Heads To ASC Tournament Hardin-Simmons will join Texas Lutheran, Concordia-Austin and East Texas Baptist for the four-team double elimination portion of the American Southwest Conference Tournament this weekend in Marshall. ETBU is the only non-ASC West team in the tournament. The four teams in the tournament all won series last weekend to garner a berth in the tournament. The winner of this weekend's tournament will earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships.
How They Got Here The Cowboys finished second in the American Southwest Conference's West Division and won its best 2-of-3 series with UT-Dallas last weekend in the first round of the ASC Tournament. The Cowboys fell 5-3 in the opener when the Comets rallied for five runs in the eighth inning. HSU responded with a 2-1 win in 10 innings in game two of the series and used a complete-game from Dalton Rucker for a 6-1 win in game three. Concordia advanced with a two-game sweep of Louisiana College in Pineville, La. East Texas Baptist spanked McMurry twice and Texas Lutheran pounded Mississippi College in two games.
Concordia is the only one of the four teams in the tournament to have won a previous title, with a win in 2002. They advanced to the College World Series that season. East Texas Baptist is 0-4 in two previous trips and Texas Lutheran went 1-2 in 2003. HSU is 8-9 all-time and advanced to the final in 2001.
