Cowboys Sting Jackets For Dramatic Win

BROWNWOOD, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ men’s basketball team scored nine straight points over the final 1:11 of the game to stun Howard Payne, 77-76, in American Southwest Conference action at the Brownwood Coliseum.

The Cowboys trailed 76-68 with 1:11 to play when MyKale Hall got a steal and a layup. HSU then forced a turnover and Casey Riddle hit a 3-pointer with :53 to play. Another turnover by Howard Payne gave the Cowboys the ball back and Riddle hit a jumper with :22 to play.

Henry Valladeres then turned the ball over again for Howard Payne and HSU got to set up what would be the eventual game winner. Riddle drove in the lane and was triple teamed and he found a wide open Aaron Thornton for a layup with :06 to play. Valladeres’ shot at the buzzer missed and the Cowboys secured the win.

Riddle led four Cowboys into double figures with 16 points, 13 of which came in the second half. He also added seven assists. John Derr had 13 points and Aaron Thornton and Derek Bryant had 10 points each.

John Bryant led Howard Payne with 15 points and Keith Perry had 14.

HSU is now 3-12 on the year and 3-8 in ASC West action. Howard Payne fell to 2-14 overall and 2-10 in league play. HSU will play at Sul Ross State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
