SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell to 0-2 with an 82-74 loss to Texas Lutheran on Friday evening in Seguin.
The teams played a hard-fought first half and the Cowboys trailed 27-25 with 3:02 to play but the Bulldogs closed the first half on a 7-2 run to take a 34-27 halftime lead.
Every time the Cowboys made a charge in the second half the Bulldogs had an answer. HSU tied the game at 44. TLU pushed it out to a 60-50 lead and the Cowboys cut it down to 74-71 with 2:20 to play. TLU sealed the game with 8-for-8 free throw shooting down the stretch.
The Bulldogs outrebounded the smaller Cowboys 56-36 and had a 31-11 advantage in second-chance points.
Matthew Gillette led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He was one of three players to record a double-double.
HSU will return to action tomorrow at Schreiner at 4 p.m.
