KERRVILLE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell 93-84 at Schreiner on Saturday evening.
Schreiner opened up a big first-half lead that ballooned to as many as 19 points before the Cowboys cut it to 44-30 at halftime.
In the second half, the Cowboys put up 54 points and got back into the game. C.J. Rice's 3-pointer with 3:40 to play cut the deficit to 77-72. Schreiner was able to keep the Cowboys from getting any closer by hitting 9-of-10 free throws in the final 1:15 when HSU had to go to a foul strategy to get back in the game.
With freshman forward Salomon Smith out with injury, fellow freshman C.J. Rice stepped up big with 17 points and seven rebounds. Caleb Spoon had his best game of the year with 33 points, including 24 in the second half.
The Cowboys are 0-3 and will open ASC play on Thursday at Belhaven. Schreiner improved to 2-3 on the year.
