ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team stayed in the race for a spot in the American Southwest Conference tournament with an 83-55 win over Sul Ross State on Thursday evening at the Mabee Complex.
The loss snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Cowgirls and keep their hopes alive for a spot in the conference tournament. HSU would need a win over Howard Payne or McMurry in the final two conference games and Sul Ross State would need to lose out.
The Cowgirls jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter and never trailed in the game. HSU led 19-10 after the first quarter and pushed the lead out to 41-28 at halftime.
HSU put the game away with a 17-0 run to start the third quarter to push the lead out to 58-28.
Heidi Schroeder had 16 points and Taylor Gaffney had 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Addison Garcia had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Annie Lenoir led the Lobos with 11 points and Keilah Williams scored 10.
HSU is now 5-17 overall and 3-12 in conference play. Sul Ross State fell to 6-16 overall and 4-10 in league play. The Cowgirls will host Howard Payne on Saturday at 2 p.m.
