Cowboys Picked Second In ASC

RICHARDSON, Texas - Hardin-Simmons was picked to place second in the American Southwest Conference, behind three-time defending champion Mary Hardin-Baylor and one point ahead of Mississippi College.
The Cowboys are coming off of a 6-4 campaign a year ago, but return 15 starters off a team that went 6-2 in conference play and tied with Mississippi College for second.
Mary Hardin-Baylor returns only nine starters from a year ago, but the league's coaches, sports information and media still think the Cru is the team to beat. UMHB was picked first in 24 of the 27 ballots and accumulated 240 poll points.
HSU was listed first on one ballot and had 197 points, Mississippi College was first on two ballots and had 196 total points. East Texas Baptist, Louisiana College, Texas Lutheran, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State and McMurry rounded out the poll.
The Cowboys open American Southwest Conference play on Sept. 20 at Louisiana College. HSU plays at Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Sept. 6 in the season opener and opens fall camp on Aug. 14.
Quarterback Adam Shaffer of Mississippi College, linebacker Eric Henri of Mary Hardin-Baylor and kicker Kyle Pope of East Texas Baptist were named the preseason offensive, defensive and special teams players of the year.
