An HSU Win Would

► Make the Cowboys 18-2 all-time against TLU.

► Give the Cowboys sole possession of second place in the ASC standings.

► Make the Cowboys 8-1 on the road in the last two seasons.

Last Time Out

HSU is coming off of a 35-10 win last week at Sul Ross State. HSU ran a school-record 61 times for 371 yards in the win and the defense held the Lobos to 213 total yards of offense. Texas Lutheran defeated East Texas Baptist, 41-34 in Marshall.

Next Up

HSU returns to Abilene for Homecoming next week against Southwestern. The game is at 1:30 p.m., rather than the normal 1 p.m. start for home games. HSU then hosts Belhaven and plays at McMurry in the final two weeks of the season.

In The Polls

The Cowboys did not lose any ground in the D3football.com poll, remaining fifth in the national ranking. HSU moved up two spots in the American Football Coaches Association poll to sixth. Texas Lutheran is not ranked in either poll.

On the Air

You can listen to Cowboy football on 100.7 in Abilene and on the internet at www. hsuathletics.com. You can also listen on your mobile phone using the HSU Athletics app. Al Pickett is in his 12th season in the Cowboys' play-by-play chair and 14th overall on the broadcast team. Former Cowboy quarterback Travis Jones will handle the color commentary duties for home games and director of athletic communications Chad Grubbs will handle the color analysis for the road games.

Taking It To The House

Junior utility man Reese Childress returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown against the Lobos and it tied Collin McCormick's school record set in 1992 against Millsaps. Childress was named the ASC special teams player of the week for that return and he also averaged 43.3 yards on four punts in the game.

Grinding It Out

The Cowboys ran a school-record 61 times last week in the win over Sul Ross State. Xavier Jones had 124 yards and two touchdowns and Marc Reed has 122 yards on 12 carries. Zai Zai Smith, Peyton Killam, Kavan Johnson and Reese Childress all carried the ball out of different running packages.

Ground Battle

Saturday's game will feature a battle of wills on the ground. The Cowboys lead the league with 297.2 yards per game on the ground and the Bulldogs allow just 62.2 yards per contest rushing.

Total Offense

The Cowboys still lead the nation in total offense at 571.3 yards per game and HSU is second in the nation in scoring at 52.3 points per game. The Cowboys also rank seventh nationally in rushing yards per game.

Next Man Up

For various reasons. the Cowboys played last week without its starting quarterback, running back and all-American wide receiver and kick returner last week against Sul Ross State and still found a way to come up with a convincing win on the road against one of the top teams in the league.

Both Sides Of the Ball

HSU ranks first or second in scoring offense, scoring defense, total offense and total defense in the conference. They are the only team in the conference to make that claim.

Special Teams Too

The Cowboys have one of the top all-around special teams' units in the conference as well. HSU is first in punting and second in kickoff coverage. The Cowboys lead the league in kickoff return yardage and is second in punt return yardage.

Red Zone Specialty

HSU has scored touchdowns on 23 of its 30 trips into the red zone this season and also has three field goals. On the other side of the ball, HSU has allowed just 12 trips to the red zone and teams have scored just four touchdowns on the year.

Keeping Them Out

HSU has allowed just two rushing touchdowns on the year. The Cowboy defense has allowed just eight touchdowns in six games this season overall.

Knock It Down

Senior defensive back Reggie Davis leads the Cowboys and is fourth in the conference with 10 pass break ups on the year.

X-Man

Senior transfer running back Xavier Jones received his first career start last week and he responded with his second 100-yard rushing effort of the season.

Freshman QBs

Freshmen quarterbacks Marc Reed and Peyton Killam saw their most extensive action of the season last week in the running packages and both delivered. Reed had 122 yards on 12 carries and Killam had 50 yards on eight totes.

Fast Start

The Cowboys again got off to a quick start last week. HSU took the opening drive for a score as Ty Hooper hit Matthew Sandoval for a 40-yard touchdown pass. The Cowboys forced a quick punt and Reese Childress scored on a 90-yard punt return and then after another stop, the Cowboys drove again for a score and a 21-0 first quarter lead.

Defense

HSU ended up allowing just 213 yards last week against Sul Ross State. The Cowboys have held five of the six opponents so far this year under 300 yards in total offense. HSU has allowed the opponent more than one offensive touchdown just once this season.

Under The Lights

The Cowboys are 2-0 in night games this season and they are 19-4 under Jesse Burleson under the lights.

About The Bulldogs

The Bulldogs have won three straight games and four of the last five to improve to 4-2 on the season. The Lobos have scored over 40 points in each of its last two wins.

The Bulldogs have moved the ball well on the year at 435.5 yards per game but 18 turnovers have been an issue. TLU has eight interceptions and 10 fumbles on the year. TLU has used a ball control philosophy as they average over seven minutes per game of possession more than its opponents.

Five different ball carriers have over 200 yards rushing, led by quarterback Kyle Grona who has 425 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Grona is 82-of-141 on the year in the air for 1,004 yards and eight touchdowns with seven interceptions.

Jekovan Holmes leads the team with 20 catches and five receivers have at least 10 catches on the year.

Adarius Norwood and Emory Cuzze lead the defense with 41 and 40 tackles respectively. Manny Longoria has six sacks on the year and the Bulldogs have 21 sacks on the year. James Bell has three interceptions to lead the secondary.
