An HSU Win Would

►Make the Cowboys 3-0 against Southwestern since the Pirates brought football back.

►Make the Cowboys 7-1 or better after eight games for the third straight season.

►Push the Cowboys to 42-13-5 in homecoming games. HSU has won nine straight homecoming games.

Last Time Out

Dedrick Strambler picked off a Kyle Grona pass with 1:27 to play to preserve a 33-30 win over Texas Lutheran. Landry Turner had 324 yards passing and three touchdowns in his first game back and Devonte' Walker had 11 catches for 125 yards in the contest.

Next Up

The Cowboys will close out the regular-season home slate with a 1 p.m. game against Belhaven.

In The Polls

HSU is ranked fifth in this week's D3football.com poll and sixth in the American Football Coaches Association poll.

On The Air

You can listen to Cowboy football on 100.7 in Abilene and on the internet at www. hsuathletics.com. You can also listen on your mobile phone using the HSU Athletics app. Al Pickett is in his 12th season in the Cowboys' play-by-play chair and 14th overall on the broadcast team. Former Cowboy quarterback Travis Jones will handle the color commentary duties for home games and director of athletic communications Chad Grubbs will handle the color analysis for the road games.

Welcome To The Hall

HSU will induct four members into the Athletic Hall of Fame this evening at 6:30. Former Cowboys running back Lance Moore will be inducted. Moore is the single-season leader in several categories at Hardin-Simmons University. He holds the Division III era record for rushing TD's in a season with 23 in 2004 and he is the single-season scoring leader with 164 points also in 2004. He is second all-time at HSU in scoring and is fifth all time in career rushing yards with 2,479 yards. He had 12 100-yard rushing games in his career at HSU. He will be joined by three other standouts. Clay Martin, whose son Garrett played for the Cowboys and is an intern coach this year for HSU, is a decorated high school baseball coach and played baseball for HSU. Virginia Aguilar led the Cowgirls to their first ASC title. She also was an Olden Medal winner as the top student at HSU. Jason Darby was a standout golfer for the Cowboys and led the Cowboys to a pair of ASC titles and to the NCAA Tournament.

Another Thriller In Seguin

Saturday's game in Seguin marked the third straight game that went down to the wire between Texas Lutheran and Hardin-Simmons. The 2012 game was in overtime and HSU won 65-58. In 2015, Reese Childress caught a touchdown pass with :11 to play in a 35-27 HSU win. Last week Dedrick Strambler's interception with 1:27 to play ended the drive for the Bulldogs and allowed the Cowboys to take a knee in the victory formation.

Fourth-Quarter Comebacks Are Rare

Close fourth quarter games are a rarity for Cowboy football. Under Jesse Burleson the Cowboys have had just five games where there was a fourth-quarter lead change. HSU has

won four of those games and three have been against Texas Lutheran.

► 2012 - Scott Newberry hit a 26-yard field goal to tie the game at 51 against Texas Lutheran and send it to overtime. HSU ended up winning in two overtimes.

► 2015 - Weston Garner hit Reese Childress on a touchdown pass with 11 seconds to play to give the Cowboys a 33-27 lead over TLU after trailing 27-26.

►2015 - The game with Mary Hardin-Baylor at Shelton in 2015 featured four lead changes in the fourth quarter and the Cowboys won the game on a 57-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Breton to Jessie Ramos.

►2016 - HSU led 15-13 last season in Belton before the Cru scored early in the fourth quarter for a 20-15 win.

►Last week Marc Reed capped a 10-play, 75-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown run and Dedrick Strambler thwarted the TLU comeback attempt with a fourth-quarter interception.

Welcome Back

The Cowboys welcomed starting quarterback Landry Turner to the lineup and he went 28-of-43 for 324 yards and three touchdowns. Turner missed four games for violating university policy, but is back in good standing with the university and his team.

Strambler's Pick Leads To Honors

Dedrick Strambler was named the ASC defensive player of the week and was also named to the D3football.com national team of the week after making the late interception. He also had nine tackles in the game for the Cowboys.

Tough Year To Be A Preseason All-American

It has not been a good year to be a preseason All-American for the Cowboys. All-American kick returner Alex Bell is out for the year with a knee injury he originally suffered against Howard Payne and reinjured against Mary Hardin-Baylor. All-American offensive lineman Jonathan Castaneda and All-American wide receiver Reese Childress both came out of last week's game with injuries and are game-time decisions this week.

1-2

The Cowboys rank second in both scoring offense and scoring defense in the ASC. HSU is averaging 49.6 points per game and allowing just 16 points per contest. The Cowboys are still the top offense in the conference by four yards per game over East Texas Baptist. HSU is averaging 553.9 yards per game. The Cowboys are second in the league in total defense allowing just 302.3 yards per contest.

Running The Ball

This week's game features the top two rushing offenses in the ASC. Southwestern is averaging 278.3 yards per contest on the ground and the Cowboys are running for 269.4 yards per game.

Another 100-Yard Game For Hemphill

After missing the Sul Ross State game with an ankle injury, Jaquan Hemphill came back for his fourth 100-yard rushing effort of the season against TLU. He had 115 yards. He now has eight career 100-yard games.

Still An Impact

Reese Childress' all-around exploits are well documented. He was injured last week on the opening possession and was not able to return to the game as a wide receiver. He still had a huge impact on the game as he got off a punt under a heavy rush in the fourth quarter. The punt traveled 52 yards and flipped the field for TLU's final possession. Childress leads the ASC in punting at 39.7 yards per kick. He is also second in the league with 116.7 all-purpose yards per game.

Tackling Machines

Josh White made the start at weakside linebacker last week and he had 14 tackles in the contest. Matthew Hawkins added 12 tackles for HSU.  White has 64 tackles on the season and could get to 100 tackles for the second straight year. Hawkins has 47 tackles on the season.

Block That Kick

Donavon Hailey blocked a pair of kicks last week and was named the ASC special teams player of the week. He blocked a field goal on the first drive of the game for TLU and then later had a blocked extra point. Those potential four points could have been the difference in the game.

About The Pirates

Southwestern comes into the game 4-3 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. The Pirates have won two straight games and three of four after a 1-2 start. SU is a run heavy team that has ran the ball on over 70 percent of its snaps this year. They can beat you with the deep ball when they do pass. They average 15.2 yards per catch on the season.

Quarterback Frederick Hoover makes the offense go. He has run for 652 yards and nine touchdowns and has thrown for 1,296 yards and 12 touchdowns. David Brandeburg leads the team with 22 catches, but averages just seven yards per catch. Landry Bray, Jaxon Borowski and A.J. Daniels all average 19.6 or more yards per catch.

The defense is led by a pair of outstanding four-year starting corners in Nik Kelly and DeeJay Johnson. Kelly has 11 pass break ups and three interceptions and Johnson has 10 PBUs and two interceptions. Garrett Womack leads the team with four sacks for 40 yards. Josiah Minnifield, Joshua Scroggin, Christopher Crawford, Ben brockman and Haydem Smith all have between 35 and 41 tackles.
