Cowboys Defeat McMurry For ASC West Title

ABILENE, Texas - Hardin-Simmons' men's tennis team pushed its American Southwest Conference winning streak to 68 straight matches with a pair of wins on Saturday, 9-0 over Sul Ross State and 6-3 over McMurry.

HSU cruised through its match with Sul Ross State this morning at the Streich Tennis Center. HSU lost only five games and won the match with only two regulars - Ryan Waters and Andy Cairens in the singles lineup.

In the afternoon, the Cowboys went across town to place McMurry for the ASC West title. Both teams were 6-0 heading into the match in ASC West action.

The Cowboys set the tone early with wins in all three doubles matches. Stephen Salazar and Daniel Moore had to fight off two match points to win at No. 3 doubles, 9-7, over Ross Bennett and Tony Williams. Waters and Wade Morgan won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles and Cariens and Justin Lockaby won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.

The two team split the six singles matches. Waters won 6-2, 6-2 over Will Davis at No. 1 singles. Cariens won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4 singles and Lockaby won 7-6, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Wade Morgan lost a tough three-setter to Bryan Rainwater at No. 2 singles and Daniel Moore and Trey Chavez lost in straight sets.

The Cowboys finished the ASC West season with a 7-0 record and are 11-6 heading into the ASC Championships next weekend at UT-Tyler. McMurry finished 11-6 overall and 6-1 in league play. The Cowboys will have a first round bye in the tournament and will play at 10 a.m. Saturday in Tyler.
