Cowgirls Fall To Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’
women’s basketball team held a halftime lead, but it quickly
evaporated in a 65-48 loss to defending national champion Howard
Payne in American Southwest Conference action Thursday night at the
Brownwood Coliseum.
HSU led 23-22 at halftime, but HPU came out on a 7-0 run to take a
29-23 lead with 18:46 to play. HSU never led again. It was a 54-47
game with 4:07 to play when Mollie Brawner missed a 3-pointer that
would have cut the deficit to four. On the ensuing possession Hope
Hohertz hit an old-fashion 3-point play to push the lead to
57-47.
Lindsey Newcombe had 18 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks for the
Cowgirls and Haylee Allen and Bo Warm each had 10 points.
Hohertz led HPU with 20 points and five more players scored six or
more points in a balanced effort.
Both teams now have identical 17-5 records overall and 13-5 in
American Southwest Conference play. HSU will play at Sul Ross State
on Saturday at 1 p.m.
