

Cowgirls Win At Sul Ross State
ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’
women’s basketball team had its best defensive effort of the
season in a 56-40 win over Sul Ross State, Saturday afternoon in
American Southwest Conference action at the Gallego Center in
Alpine.
HSU held the Lobos to 27 percent shooting and the 40 points were
the fewest the Cowgirls allowed this season. HSU dominated on the
boards 52-31.
The Cowgirls took control of the game early on, leading 16-6 at the
10:41 mark of the first half. Sul Ross State had the deficit in
single digits only two other times. HSU led 25-12 at the half.
HSU opened the second half on a 16-3 run and pushed the lead to 20
at 41-15, after that the Cowgirls played almost exclusively its
bench for the final 10 minutes.
Both starting post players Lindsey Newcombe and Kristen Harris each
had double-doubles for the Cowgirls. Newcombe had 14 points and 21
rebounds in only 21 minutes of action. Harris had 15 points and 10
rebounds to lead the Cowgirls.
DeShona Hill had 21 points for Sul Ross State.
The Cowgirls improved to 18-5 on the year and to 14-5 in league
play. Sul Ross State fell to 1-21 overall and 1-17 in conference
play. HSU will conclude its regular season with games at Texas
Lutheran and Schreiner next weekend.
