Cowgirls Hold Off Mary Hardin-Baylor

BELTON, Texas - Mollie Brawner scored five of her game-high 23 points in the final 1:39 of the game as Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team defeated Mary Hardin-Baylor 69-66 in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Mayborn Center in Belton.

Brawner broke a 64-64 tie with a jumper just inside the arc that she was fouled on. She hit the free throw to give the Cowgirls a 67-64 lead. Landie Thompson then scored the final of her 22 points in the game to make it 67-66 and Brawner hit two more free throws with 12 seconds to play to seal the win.

The Cowgirls jumped out to a 27-12 lead at the 10:48 mark, behind 11 points from Brawner. UMHB chipped away at the Cowgirls deficit the rest of the half and it was 35-32 at halftime.

HSU pushed the lead to 40-32 out of the locker room and UMHB had to chip away again. The Cru did finally take their first lead at 52-50, but Bo Warm and Brawner hit back-to-back 3-pointers and the Cowgirls never trailed again.

Lindsey Newcombe had 18 points and 15 rebounds and Haylee Allen had 10 points for the Cowgirls. Thompson had 22 and Jenny Black had 13 for UMHB.

The Cowgirls are now 15-3 on the year and have won eight games in a row. HSU moved into a first-place tie with McMurry, who lost to Concordia on Saturday. The two teams will play on Monday night at Kimbrell Arena for the outright lead in the ASC West. UMHB fell to 10-8 overall and 9-5 in ASC play.
