Cowgirls Run Past LeTourneau
ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team evened its season record at 2-2 with a 73-54 win over LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex in Abilene.
The win also marked the 200th career win for HSU head coach Shanna Briggs.
The Cowgirls never trailed in the game and had an early 16-6 lead. HSU pushed the lead to as many as 17 at 35-18 and led 37-21 at halftime.
In the second half, LeTourneau used an 8-0 run midway through to cut the deficit to 50-42, but the Cowgirls gradually pulled away from that point to win the game going away.
Each team shot 43 percent in the game. HSU had the advantage in the paint outscoring LeTourneau 35-26.
Angela Newcombe had her second straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Jasmine Lewis added 14 points and six steals and Alexi Popelar had 11 points. Freshman point guard Joanna Daniel had nine points in her first significant game action of the season.
Sharday Cotton had 10 points to pace LeTourneau. HSU forced 21 turnovers from the Yellow Jackets.
The Cowgirls are 2-2 overall and 1-1 in league play. LeTourneau fell to 2-2- overall and 0-2 in ASC action. HSU hits the road this weekend for games at Texas-Dallas and Ozarks.
