Cowgirls Snap Skid With 82-69 Win Over Centenary

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a solid 82-69 win over Centenary on Thursday evening at the Mabee Complex.

The two teams played a tightly contested first half with neither team leading by more than five points. HSU led 36-35 at halftime.

In the second half, HSU used a 6-0 run from the 13:30 mark to 12:17 mark to take their biggest lead up until that point of the game at 51-44. HSU gradually pulled away from that point on and eventually led by as many as 22 points at 82-60. Centenary scored the last nine points of the game.

Angela Newcombe had a career-high 20 points. Jasmine Lewis added 16 points, Alexis Popelar had 12 and freshman Rachel Holik had 12 points in her most extensive duty of the year.

HSU dominated the game on the glass with a 49-29 advantage. The Cowgirls also had just 12 turnovers and shot 48 percent from the field, including 56 percent in the second half. HSU had a 50-23 advantage in the paint in the game.

Megan Daniel led Centenary with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Vashni Sharp-Moore added 16 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

HSU is now 3-4 on the year and will return to ASC play on Saturday when it hosts East Texas Baptist at 1 p.m. Centenary fell to 2-5 on the year.
