Cowgirls Fall To McMurry

 

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team fell 72-64 to crosstown rival McMurry in American Southwest Conference action at Kimbrell Arena on Monday evening. 

The game was closely contested early on and McMurry led 18-16 with 8:36 to play in the first half when they went on an 8-0 run to push the lead to 24-16 and the War Hawks took a 34-26 lead into the halftime break.

In the second half, McMurry gradually extended the lead and had another 8-0 run to push the lead to 64-48 with 5:14 to play.

HSU then came to life offensively and scored 10 straight points including two 3-pointers by Coco Cartwright to cut it to 64-58 with 2:32 to play. The teams traded baskets and it was 68-62 when Keisha Collins scored on a putback to seal the game for McMurry.

McMurry scored 23 second-chance points in the game as the War Hawks beat the Cowgirls 45-32 on the boards.

Angela Newcombe led the Cowgirls with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Both efforts were career highs for Newcombe. Kara Looten joined Newcombe in double figures with 17 points.

Keisha Collins led McMurry with 20 points and M.J. Vickers added 16 off the bench.

HSU is now 4-5 on the year and 2-4 in ASC action. The Cowgirls will be off until Dec. 30 at Texas Wesleyan. McMurry improved to 8-1 on the year and 6-0 in ASC play.
