Cowgirls Beat Southwestern, 61-57

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team beat Southwestern 61-57 in non-conference action at the Mabee Complex on Thursday evening.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first quarter and the Cowgirls led 14-13 after one period. HSU opened the second period on a 9-3 run and took a 23-16 lead with 5:36 to play in the half on a Jasmine McClellan jumper.

The lead was short lived as Southwestern went on a 10-2 run to take a 26-25 lead with :29 to play in the half. Taylor Gaffney then gave the Cowgirls the lead back with a floater in the paint with :14 to play and then Gaffney stole the inbounds pass and McClellan split a pair of free throws to give the Cowgirls a 28-26 halftime lead.

The third quarter featured three ties and four lead changes and the Cowgirls still led 40-38 going into the final frame.

HSU took control of the game with a 13-1 run from the 6:50 mark to the 3:31 mark. Freshman Logan Redding had six points in the spurt and Kourtney Holyfield had a 3-pointer. Southwestern cut it to three points on a couple of occasions but the Cowgirls held on at the free throw line down the stretch.

Both teams had a good night defensively as the Cowgirls hit just 17-of-52 shots (32.7 percent) and Southwestern was just 22-of-62 (35.5 percent). The Cowgirls forced 20 turnovers by the Pirates and HSU turned it over 17 times.

Redding set career highs in points and rebounds with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double. McClellan added 12 points and Holyfield had 11 for HSU.

Madison Edwards led Southwestern with 18 points and Tori Carraway added 12.

The Cowgirls are now 4-5 on the year and will host Belhaven on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game does not count in the ASC standings. Southwestern fell to 2-6 on the year.
