Cowgirls Fall To Belhaven

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team fell 75-65 to Belhaven on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.

The first quarter featured four ties and two lead changes as the teams went back and forth and Belhaven led 16-13 after the first quarter. In the second quarter it was much of the same until Belhaven used a 13-2 run to take a 35-26 lead. The Blazers led 37-33 at halftime.

Another big run by the Blazers in the third quarter was the difference as they used a 15-2 run to open up a 59-41 lead.

HSU had a big 16-0 run in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to six point put Sierra Pittman closed the game with four straight free throws.

The Cowgirls continued to be cold from the field as they hit just 25-of-75 (33.3) percent in the game. Belhaven on the other side shot 51.9 percent.

HSU did dominate on the boards with a 45-36 advantage, including 20 offensive rebounds. Kayla Brown led the way with 11 and Deontae Ingram had 10.  HSU had a 19-5 advantage in second-chance points in the game.

Kourtney Holyfield led the Cowgirls with 11 points and Danie Mabry and Heidi Schroeder added 10 points each.

Sierra Pittman had 27 points to pace the Blazers and Candler Gregory had 22 points including six 3-pointers.

HSU is now 4-6 on the year and will close out the fall semester with a 1 p.m. game at home against Schreiner on Monday. Belhaven improved to 4-4 on the year.
