Cowgirls Fall to Howard Payne

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team fell 67-52 to Howard Payne in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Thursday night.

Both teams started slow and the score was 5-4 at the first media timeout of the first quarter. HPU then outscored the Cowgirls 16-4 over the final 4:42 of the quarter to take control of the game.

HPU pushed the lead out to 41-23 at halftime. The Cowgirls made a push at the start of the third quarter and cut the deficit to 45-32 on a Ja'Lee Carver 3-pointer with 7:24 to play in the quarter, but HSU scored six straight to push the lead back to 17. HPU led 53-40 at the end of three quarters.

The Cowgirls were able to get the deficit to 56-48 with 3:20 but HPU was able to close out the game and win their seventh straight game in the series.

HSU turned the ball over 22 times that led to 23 points for HPU. The Cowgirls forced 17 turnovers but only converted them into seven points.

Heidi Schroeder led the Cowgirls with 17 points and a career-best 14 rebounds. Kourtney Holyfield added 11 points.

Presley McKethan led HPU with 16 points. Valarie Matlock had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Micah Cisneroz had 12 points.

HSU is now 6-9 on the year and 2-5 in ASC play. Howard Payne is now 9-7 overall and 6-1 in ASC action. The Cowgirls will host Sul Ross State on Saturday at the Mabee Complex.
