Cowgirls Rally For Win At Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team rallied from a nine-point fourth quarter deficit for an 85-81 American Southwest Conference win over Sul Ross State on Thursday evening at the Gallegos Center in Alpine.

The Cowgirls fell behind 20-12 in the first quarter but came storming back with a 9-0 run to take the lead 21-20 before the Lobos hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for a 23-21 lead.

HSU had a strong second quarter fueled by 13 points by Kourtney Holyfield in the quarter and took a 41-38 lead into halftime. The score was tied eight times and there were five lead changes in the closely contested first half.

Sul Ross State came out on a 13-2 run to start the second half to take a 51-42 lead. HSU scored eight straight points to cut it to 51-50. The Lobos led 59-58 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Lindsey Hearn hit three straight 3-pointers for the Lobos to open the lead out to 73-64, but the Cowgirls came back with nine straight points by Dani Mabry and then four more from Logan Redding to cut it to 78-77.

Ja'Lee Carver then came up with a steal and layup with 1:38 to play to give the Cowgirls the lead at 79-78 and the Redding had a second offensive rebound and put back to make it 81-78. HSU hit free throws to push it to 84-78. Katy Boren hit a long 3-pointer with :09 to play to cut it to 84-81, but Carver hit a free throw with 6.9 to play to setup the final score.

Holyfield led the Cowgirls with 18 points, Mabry added 14 points all in the second half, Carver had 11 points and Deontae Ingram had 10 points.

Ellyn Avery had 28 points to pace Sul Ross State and Lindsey Hearn had 21 points on seven 3-pointers.

HSU is now 8-12 on the year and 4-8 in ASC play and Sul Ross State is 9-12 and 6-6 in league play. The Cowgirls will play at Howard Payne on Saturday at 1 p.m.
