Cowgirls Lose At Howard Payne

BROWNWOOD, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team put up a valiant effort against division leading Howard Payne but fell 75-68 at the Brownwood Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

The first quarter featured three ties and four lead changes as the Cowgirls led 18-16 after the first period. HSU pushed the lead out to 22-16 early in the second quarter and led most of the rest of the quarter until Presley McKethan hit a 3-pointer right before the half to tie the game at 32.

In the third quarter the Lady Jackets opened their biggest lead of the game when McKethan hit a 3-pointer again late in the quarter to make it 54-48.

HPU pushed the lead to 62-51 with 4:52 to play, but the Cowgirls had one more push in them and cut the deficit to 66-63 with 1:11 to play on a Ja'Lee Carver layup. That is the closest they would get as HPU hit seven of eight free throws in the final :20 as the Cowgirls played the foul game to extend the game.

Danie Mabry led the Cowgirls with 16 points, Kourtney Holyfield added 14 and Deontae Ingram added 12.

Sarahi Castillo led Howard Payne with 27 points and Micah Cisneroz added 14.

HSU is now 8-13 overall and 4-9 in conference play. Howard Payne improved to 14-8 overall and 11-2 in ASC action. The Cowgirls will play at McMurry next Saturday in their next action.
