Cowgirls Lose At McMurry

ABILENE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team saw its late rally come up short in a 63-58 loss to crosstown rival McMurry on Saturday afternoon at Kimbrell Arena.

The Cowgirls closed the first quarter strong and took a 15-13 lead after the first quarter. McMurry took a 27-22 lead with 3:39 to play in the first half but the Cowgirls closed the half on an 8-0 run to take a 30-27 lead at halftime.

McMurry came out and dominated the third quarter 21-7 and took a 48-37 lead into the fourth quarter, that proved to be too much for the Cowgirls to overcome.

The Cowgirls chipped away the deficit and cut it to 56-54 with 1:35 to play on a pair of Heidi Schroeder free throws. McMurry then went to the free throw line their last four possessions of the game and hit seven of eight in the final 1:05 at the line.

McMurry outscored the Cowgirls 29-14 in points off turnovers as the Cowgirls turned it over 28 times, including 26 in the first three quarters.

Logan Redding led the Cowgirls with 11 points and Ja'Lee Carver had 10 for HSU. Haley Welch led the War Hawks with 17 points and Sham Hunter had 13 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals.

Both teams are now 8-14 on the year and 4-10 in conference play. HSU will play Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor at home to close the regular season and must win both games and get help to have any chance at the postseason.
