SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Cornell College buried 11 3-pointers to hold off Hardin-Simmons 61-53 in the Trinity Tip-Off Classic in San Antonio on Sunday.
Cornell jumped out to an 11-2 run to start the game, but the Cowgirls used a 12-3 run to tie the game at 14 midway through the second quarter. Cornell took a 28-23 lead into halftime.
Heidi Schroeder's lay-up with :47 to play in the third quarter cut the Cowgirl deficit to 40-37. CC pushed its lead to 48-41 with 6:41 to play before Addison Garcia made a shot and was fouled and made the free throw to make it 48-44.
The Cowgirls trailed 55-49 after a Taylor Gaffney 3-pointer but Cornell's Haley Grana hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock was expiring with 1:29 to play to push the lead back to nine and CC held on from there.
HSU had a balanced attack with six players scoring six or more points. Garcia led the way with nine points. Grana led Cornell with 13 points.
The Cowgirls are now 2-2 on the season and will open ASC play on Thursday at Belhaven. Cornell is also 2-2 on the year.
