JACKSON, Miss. – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team won its American Southwest Conference opener on Thursday night with a 67-65 overtime win over Belhaven in Jackson, Miss.
The Cowgirls scored the final eight points of the first quarter to take a 14-6 and held a 27-23 lead at halftime. The Cowgirls had a lead most of the rest of the way until the final minute.
Taylor Seastrunk's basket with 5:06 to play gave the Cowgirls a 51-42 lead but the Blazers came back and tied the game at 55 with :35 to play. Both teams missed to take a lead in the final seconds and then Belhaven turned it over with :13 to play but Taylor Gaffney's shot at the buzzer to win it fell off and the teams went to overtime.
Addison Garcia hit a jumper with :47 to play to give the Cowgirls a 66-65 lead. Alexis Caldwell missed a pair of free throws for the Blazers with :12 to play and Danie Mabry split a pair of free throws with :09 remaining to make it 67-65. Mabry then blocked a Caldwell 3-point attempt to try to win the game with :04 to play.
AaLiyaha Thornton had 21 points for the Blazers, Lauren Brooks added 15 and Alexis Caldwell had 10 points.
The Cowgirls are now 3-2 on the year and 1-0 in league play. Belhaven fell to 0-5 on the year and 0-1 in conference action. HSU will play at Louisiana College on Saturday.
