Cowgirls Fall Late To Howard Payne

 

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team made a strong push at rival Howard Payne but ended up falling 67-56 in American Southwest Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.

The two teams played a tight first half with the Cowgirls taking a 30-29 lead into the locker room.

HSU scored the first four points of the second half to take a 34-29 lead and then the Lady Jackets responded with a 14-2 run to take a 43-36 lead with 3:30 to play in the third quarter and led 50-42 heading into the final quarter.

The Cowgirls then chipped away at the deficit and cut it to 56-54 on a Karlea Ritchie basket with 2:35 to play. However, HPU outscored the Cowgirls 11-2 the rest of the way to secure the win.

Heidi Schroder led the Cowgirls with 16 points and eight rebounds. Danie Mabry and Taylor Gaffney each had 11 points.

Valerie Matlock led Howard Payne with 17 points and Anastasia Willis scored 13.

HSU is now 5-18 on the year and 3-13 in ASC play. Howard Payne improved to 14-9 overall and 10-5 in conference action. The Cowgirls will play at Trinity at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
