Cowgirls Advance To Round of 16

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Hardin-Simmons’
women’s soccer team advanced to the NCAA Division III
Women’s Soccer Championship Sectional Tournament with a 3-1
win over Claremont Mudd-Scripps Universities Sunday afternoon in
Claremont, Calif.
The Cowgirls dominated the pace of play in the game and finally
made it pay off with an Amy Kuykendall goal :32 before halftime.
Kuykendall received a great feed from Miranda Bersosa and she put
it away.
HSU outshot the Athena 7-3 in the first half and HSU had eight
corner kicks to none in the first half.
CMS came right back early in the second half and tied the game at
the 49:20 mark on a Lizzie Van Buskirk goal.
HSU came back and scored at the 73:57 mark on a Carlyn Powers goal
to retake the lead. HSU put the game away less than three minutes
later when Taylor Thigpen scored off a Jordan Morley assist.
Christi Carr won the game in goal for the Cowgirls. She had three
saves in the game. Christina Freidman-Gerlicz had eight saves for
CMS.
HSU outshot CMS 20-11 in the game and 8-4 on-goal. HSU also had a
12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cowgirls will face a familiar foe in the next round as they
will play Trinity. The two teams met in the first game of the
season and Trinity won 1-0. HSU has won 20 in a row since then to
move to 20-1 on the year. CMS ended its season with a 16-3-2
record. Game time and location for the Trinity game will be
announced later tonight.
