Four Cowgirls Named Academic All-District

ABILENE, Texas - Four Hardin-Simmons women soccer players have been named College Division Academic All-District VI by ESPN The Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Junior defender Sarah Stansell and junior forward Amy Kuykendall where both named to the first team. Stansell has a 4.0 GPA as a math major and Kuykendall has a 3.97 GPA in accounting. They both will go on the ballot to be an Academic All-American.

Senior Lindsay Cogburn was named to the second team with a 3.97 GPA as a speech pathology major. Junior defender Becca Gault was named to the second team with a 3.89 GPA as an athletic training major.

HSU had the most players on the two teams, with four out of the 24 players selected. The Cowgirls had the most selections by a Division III school and had four of the five players selected from ASC member schools.

The ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA academic all-American is the only official academic all-American program in the country. CoSIDA has the term academic all-American trademarked. The first-team all-district selections go on to the national ballot for all-American status.

The players are nominated by the school's sports information director and then the names are put on a ballot and voted on by the SIDs in each district. District VI consists of all of the colleges in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The college division consists of schools in NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA and NJCAA.

To be nominated to the team student-athletes must have a 3.30 GPA or better and play in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position they are nominated. Athletic and academic achievement goes into the voting process.
