Cowgirls Honored By ASC

RICHARDSON, Texas - Katie Kuykendall was named American Southwest Conference offensive freshman of the year and seven Hardin-Simmons women's soccer players were honored by the American Southwest Conference in voting by the league's head coaches.

HSU went 18-1 during the regular season and claimed its seventh straight American Southwest Conference title.

Kuykendall had seven goals and 21 assists for the Cowgirls to tie the school record for assists.

Six Cowgirls were named to the All-ASC first team. Goalkeeper Christi Carr led the league with a 0.31 goals against average and she was named to the All-ASC team for the fourth time.

Amy Kuykendall had nine goals and seven assists and was named to the team as a forward. Freshman Taylor Thigpen led the Cowgirls with 15 goals and also added nine assists and earned first-team honors as a forward as well.

Katie Kuykendall and Carlyn Powers were named to the first team as midfielders. Powers had 10 goals and five assists from her center defender spot.

Center defender Sarah Stansell was also named first team and Megan Ryan was named second team as as a defender.

ASC by-laws only allow seven players from one school to be nominated.

The Cowgirls were shutout of the major awards despite dominating the league. HSU outscored its ASC opponents 83-1 on the year during the regular season and have a 119-game unbeaten streak in ASC play.

The ASC players of the year were Kirby Posey of LeTourneau. She had 14 goals on the year for her team that did not make the ASC tournament. Carrie Kirk of Mississippi College was named the ASC defensive player of the year. Paul Grant of East Texas Baptist was named the coach of the year.
