Cowgirls Set For ASC Tournament

IRVING, Texas —
Hardin-Simmons’ softball team is set to participate in the American Southwest Conference Championship this weekend at Trinity View Park in Irving, beginning Friday morning at 11 a.m.

The Cowgirls go into the tournament with a record of 30-10 and they are the No. 1 seed in the ASC West, which gives them a first round bye. HSU will play the winner of the Louisiana College and Schreiner game that will be played at 6 p.m. on Thursday night.

If the Cowgirls win the first game, they would play at 5 p.m. Friday. If the Cowgirls lose, they will have to turn right around and play the loser of the Howard Payne and Texas-Tyler game at 2 p.m. Friday.

HSU won the ASC West with a record of 21-3. Howard Payne (29-9, 17-7) and Schreiner (26-13, 15-9) were the other two qualifiers out of the ASC West. The three ASC East participants are all ranked in the top 14 in the nation. East Texas Baptist, 35-5, won the East and is ranked third in the nation. Louisiana College is 32-6 and ranked 11th in the nation and Texas-Tyler is 31-7 and ranked 14th nationally.

Junior shortstop Courtney Clark leads the Cowgirls with a .460 batting average and she leads the league in assists with 96. She has 25 extra-base hits on the year with eight home runs and 32 RBIs. She also has 20 stolen bases.

Freshman Taylor Namey has set a school record in home runs (14) and RBIs (51).

The Cowgirls have a three-way pitching rotation that is led by freshman Sarah Shurbet, who is 15-2 with a 1.95 ERA. Sophomores Lacie Cole and Laura Rawlings are each 7-3 on the year.
