Cowgirls Move Winning Streak To 10 With Sweep Of Schreiner

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ softball team pushed
its winning streak to 10 games and the Cowgirls have a three-game
lead in the American Southwest Conference West Division after a
doubleheader sweep of Schreiner, 8-6 and 6-1, Tuesday afternoon at
Ellis Field.
In the first game, HSU came up with two clutch runs in the bottom
of the sixth for the win. In that sixth inning Cera Beasley led off
with a single and she was cut down on a fielder’s choice by
Courtney Clark. Clark then moved to second on a Lacie Cole single
and both runners moved up on a stolen base. Taylor Namey finished
off a good game at the plate with an RBI single. Shayla Lee
followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-6.
The Cowgirls had jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings.
Callie Rice had an RBI single and Namey a two-run home run In the
third inning. In the first, the Cowgirls scored a couple of
unearned runs on two throwing errors by Schreiner.
The Mountaineers cut into their deficit with three runs in the
fourth inning. Autumn Vara had an RBI double in the inning and
Lindsay Rutkowski had an RBI groundout and Tara Gonzales had an RBI
single for Schreiner.
HSU got one of the runs back with a run in the fourth on a Namey
RBI single, but Schreiner scored three runs in the fifth to tie the
game at 6-6. Rutkowski had an RBI double, Gonzales an RBI single
and Sarah Trevino had a solo home run in the inning.
Sarah Shurbet got the win in relief for the Cowgirls. She worked
the final two innings without allowing a run. Lacie Cole got the
start and allowed three runs in three innings. Laura Rawlings
allowed three runs (but only was earned). Patsy Toman took the loss
for Schreiner, allowing eight runs on 12 hits.
Namey had three hits and drove in four. Rice, Clark and Cole each
had two hits for the Cowgirls in a 12-hit attack. Gonzales had
three hits to pace Schreiner.
In the second game, Shurbet (8-1) got the start for the Cowgirls
and she was solid in a complete-game win. She scattered eight hits
and did not walk a batter, while striking out seven. She allowed
only one run on a solo home run by Marla Jendrusch in the fourth
inning.
HSU opened up a 4-0 lead in the game in the second inning. Callie
Rice had a two-run single in the inning, Namey was hit by a pitch
with the bases loaded and the Cowgirls scored the other run on an
error.
The Cowgirls added two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run
double by Shayla Lee with two outs. Lee led the offense with two
hits and two RBIs. Rice also had two RBIs. Rachel Herzog had two
hits for Schreiner.
Rebecca Hay took the loss for Schreiner, falling to 8-5 on the
year. She allowed six hits and six runs. She walked six and struck
out six.
The Cowgirls are now 15-7 on the year and 10-0 in league play.
Schreiner, who came into the game second in the ASC with a 6-2 mark
fell to 17-8 overall and 6-4 in league action. The teams will
finish the four-game set with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on
Wednesday. The series is a makeup from when they were rained out
two weeks ago.
