Cowgirls Set School Win Streak Record At 12

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ softball teams set
a school record with its 12th straight win as the Cowgirls swept an
American Southwest Conference doubleheader from Schreiner, 9-8,
9-4, at a wind-blown Ellis Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cowgirls had to rally for the first win. Trailing 8-6 going
into the bottom of the seventh inning, Taylor Namey led off getting
hit by a pitch. Shayla Lee followed with a two-run home run to left
center to tie the game for HSU. Amy Meyer followed with a triple
and after back-to-back intentional walks Ashton Sikes drew a walk
to give the Cowgirls the win.
HSU had led 4-1 after the third inning. Tara Gonzales led off the
game for Schreiner with a home run and HSU added four runs in the
bottom of the third. Courtney Clark had a three-run home run in the
inning and Taylor Namey added a solo shot.
Schreiner came back to take a 7-4 lead with six runs in the fourth
inning. It all started when Lyndsie Travis reached on an error and
then Sarah Trevino struck out, but got to first on a passed ball.
There was then a popup and an infield single to load the bases.
Gonzales then hit her second home run of the game a grand slam.
Rebecca Hay followed with a home run, to chase starter Lacie
Cole.
The Cowgirls got solo home runs from Clark and Lee in the fifth
inning to make it 7-6 and Shcreiner added a Ashley Bouthout home
run to make it 8-6 in the top of the sixth.
Cole deserved a better fate in the circle as she allowed seven
runs, but only one was earned as she did not walk a batter and
struck out eight in three and two-third innings. Laura Rawlings
came on and allowed two hits and one run to earn the win in relief.
She is now 4-3 on the year.
Hay went the distance in both games for Schreiner and she is now
8-7 on the year. She scattered 10 hits and allowed nine earned
runs, while striking out eight in the first game.
Meyer had three hits for the Cowgirls and Clark had two hits and
four RBIs, with a pair of home runs and Lee had two hits and three
RBIs, with a pair of home runs. Gonzales hit two home runs for
Schreiner and drove in five.
In the second game the Cowgirls were in control throughout, after
jumping out to an 8-1 lead. HSU scored four runs in the bottom of
the first on a Namey double and three-run home run by Callie
Rice.
HSU made it 7-1 in the third on a Lee RBI double and a two-run
single by Rice. Lee had an RBI groundout in the fourth to make it
8-1.
Schreiner got a three-run home run from Travis in the fourth her
second home run of the game, after a solo shot in the second. Clark
hit her third home run of the day in the sixth to make it 9-4.
Sarah Shurbet was again solid in the circle for the Cowgirls. She
allowed just seven hits and one earned run in the complete-game
win. She struck out eight to improve to 9-1 on the year. Hay went
the distance for Schreiner and allowed nine runs, only four of
which were earned.
Rice had a career-best five RBIs and two hits, and Clark had two
hits and scored three times. Travis had all four RBIs for
Schreiner.
The Cowgirls are now 17-7 with the win and 12-0 in league play.
Schreiner, who came into the series in second place, now is 17-10
on the year and 6-6 in ASC play. The Cowgirls will step out of
conference play on Friday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against NAIA
Texas Wesleyan at Ellis Field.
