Cowgirls Sweep Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ softball team completed a four-game American Southwest Conference sweep of Sul Ross State with another pair of run rules, 19-2 and 9-0, Saturday afternoon at Lady Lobo Field in Alpine.

The Cowgirls won all four games in the series by virtue of the run-rule and opened conference play 4-0. HSU improved to 9-7 with the wins. Sul Ross State is now 1-21 on the year and 0-8 in ASC play.

In the first game, Lacie Cole (2-1) picked up the win for the Cowgirls in the circle as she allowed only two runs (one earned) over three innings. Laura Rawlings did not allow a hit in two innings of relief.

HSU jumped out to a 7-2 lead after three innings. In the first the Cowgirls scored four runs as Amy Meyer had a two-run double, Cole had a RBI singles and Cera Beasley had a bases loaded walk. In the third the Cowgirls added three runs. Courtney Clark had two-run homer in the inning and Beasley added an RBI triple.

The Cowgirls added two more runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by Clark. HSU then had 10 runs on seven hits and three errors in the fifth. Shayla Lee had a sacrifice fly, Cole had an RBI single, Laura Rawlings had an RBI single, Taylor Namey had a two-run single, Lee had a three-run triple, and Katie Shurbet had an RBI double in the inning.

Clark was 3-for-5 with four RBIs for the Cowgirls Namey was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs and Lee was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and four RBIs for the Cowgirls.

In the second game, freshman Sarah Shurbet (4-1) went the distance in the circle, allowing just three hits and striking out five over five innings.

The Cowgirls played small ball in the first inning to get a run. Clark walked and after a fly out, stole second. She moved to third on a wild pitch and Taylor Namey squeezed her in with bunt. HSU added three more runs in the third to make it 4-0.

Beasley led off with a single and moved to third on a Clark double. Beasley scored when Laura Rawlings reached on a ground to first that was misplayed. Meyer then had a RBI groundout and Lee had an RBI single for the Cowgirls.

HSU put the run-rule in effect in the fifth with five more runs. Rawlings had an RBI single in the inning, Katie Shurbet had an RBI single and Callie Rice an RBI triple. HSU also added a couple of runs on errors.

Clark was 2-for-2 and scored three runs in the game and Lee was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI.

HSU opens a 12-game homestand on Friday when it hosts Texas Lutheran.
