Cowgirls Sweep Texas Lutheran

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons and Texas Lutheran came
into its weekend softball series tied atop the American Southwest
Conference standings, and Hardin-Simmons left the weekend with a
four-game lead over the Lady Bulldogs as the Cowgirls completed a
four-game sweep with 11-4 and 6-1 wins on Sunday at Ellis
Field.
In the first game, TLU scored in the first inning on a sacrifice
fly by Alison Organ. HSU countered with three runs on five hits in
the bottom of the first. Taylor Namey had an RBI single, Amy Meyer
had a RBI double and Namey stole home on the back end of a double
steal.
TLU scored three runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Two of the
runs came on bases loaded walks and the other on a fielder’s
choice.
HSU scored five runs in the fourth inning to retake the lead at
8-4. Sarah Shurbet had a bases loaded walk, Namey had a two-run
double and Shayla Lee had a two-run single in the inning. HSU added
an unearned run in the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth
on a two-run single by Cera Beasley.
Namey had two hits and three RBIs for the Cowgirls and Lee had
three hits.
Laura Rawlings got the start for the Cowgirls and she allowed four
runs in three and one-third innings. Sarah Shurbet went the rest of
the way and allowed only two hits and no runs to earn the win to
improve to 6-1. Brigitte Neumann took the loss for TLU.
In the second game, Lacie Cole scattered four hits and allowed just
one unearned run to improve to 3-1 on the season.
HSU got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first
inning. Lacie Cole had a two-run single in the inning and Katie
Shurbet added an RBI double. HSU made it 5-0 with two more runs in
the third inning on a two-run single by Shurbet.
TLU scored its only run in the sixth on a two-base error by the
Cowgirls. HSU scored a run in the sixth when Courtney Clark tripled
and then scored on an overthrow. Clark had three hits for the
Cowgirls and Shurbet had three RBIs in the game for HSU.
The Cowgirls are now 13-7 overall and 8-0 in ASC West action. TLU
fell to 9-13 overall and 4-4 in league play. HSU will play
second-place Schreiner in a four-game ASC set on Tuesday and
Wednesday at Ellis Field.
