Cowgirls Split With UMHB To Take ASC West Title

BELTON, Texas — Hardin-Simmons’ softball team
secured the American Southwest Conference West Division by
splitting a doubleheader at Mary Hardin-Baylor on Friday after noon
at Dee Dillon Field. The Cowgirls lost the first game 3-2 and won
the nightcap 3-1.
In the second game, Courtney Clark broke a scoreless tie in the
sixth inning with a solo home run to lead off the inning. The
Cowgirls added two more runs in the seventh on a RBI double by
Clark and Clark later scored on an error.
UMHB received an RBI single by Sabrina Garcia to make it 3-1, but
the Cowgirls held on for the win.
Sarah Shubert was stellar for the Cowgirls as she went the distance
to improve to 14-2. She allowed only three hits and one unearned
run. Clark had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs.
In the first game, UMHB scored three runs in the bottom of the
seventh inning to take the win.
Clark had an RBI single in the fifth and in the seventh she hit a
sacrifice fly to drive in Kelsey Evans, who had pinch ran for
Kourtney Bailey who led off with a walk. With one out, Lacie Cole
reached on an error and Cera Beasley had a bunt single to load the
bases.
UMHB scored three times in the seventh. Jordan Schrutka reached on
an error and moved to second on a sac bunt. Sara Johnston then
doubled her home. Courtney Roman followed with a single and stole
second to put runners on second and third. Wells then singled to
center to drive in Schurtka and Roman scored on a throwing error by
Cera Beasley.
Lacie Cole was the hard-luck loser as she went the distance for the
Cowgirls and allowed just one earned run. The Cowgirls had just
four hits with Beasley having three of them.
The Cowgirls are now 28-10 overall and 19-3 in league play. UMHB
fell to 20-18 overall and 13-9 in league play. The teams will play
a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
