Cowgirls Drop Doubleheader To Southwestern
ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' softball team dropped a doubleheader to Southwestern, 3-2 and 5-3, in the home opener at Ellis Field on Saturday.
In the first game, Southwestern took an early lead on a solo home run by Kaitlyn Pavlicek in the second inning and made it 2-0 in the fourth with a RBI double by Pavlicek.
HSU tied the game in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Amy Meyer led off with a double and moved to third on a Kelsey Evans singles. Jodi Hierholzer drove home a run on a groundout that turned into an error and Megan McCormick had an RBI single.
Southwestern retook the lead in the sixth inning on a solo home run by Kayla Irvin. Pavlicek had two hits to lead Southwestern and McCormick had two hits for HSU.
Lyndsy Maus worked four innings before Lauren Zearfoss worked three shutout innings with six strikeouts. Megann Lewis took the loss for the Cowgirls to fall to 0-2. She allowed just three hits and three runs and she struck out six.
In the nightcap, Southwestern jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning. Irvin had an RBI double in the first and Pavlicek had an RBI triple. In the second inning, Jacquelin Rosson had an RBI single to make it 3-0.
The Cowgirls scored two runs in the third inning. Blair Wallace and Shelby McIntyre had RBI doubles for HSU to plate the only runs of the game.
Abigail O'Connor had a solo home run in the sixth inning and Amanda Ambrose had an RBI single in the seventh to round out the scoring.
Zaerfoss earned the win with seven strong innings, scattering five hits and striking out two. Sarah Shurbet went the distance for the Cowgirls and she allowed 13 hits and five earned runs in the loss.
Taylor Turpin had four hits for Southwestern as part of a 13-hit attack. Blair Wallace had two hits for the Cowgirls against her former team.
HSU is now 0-4 on the young season and will travel to the LeTourneau Tournament next weekend in Longview. Southwestern improved to 2-4 on the season.
