Cowgirls Sweep ASC Opening Games At Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' softball team opened American Southwest Conference action with a doubleheader sweep of Sul Ross State, 8-0 and 11-4, on Thursday evening in Alpine.

The Cowgirls won the first game by the run rule in five innings. Megan Lewis and Leslie Henderson combined to throw a two-hitter. Lewis went two innings and struck out two Leslie Henderson went the final three innings for the win.

HSU scored a run in the first inning when Taylor Namey had an RBI single to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead. Blair Wallace then led off the second inning with a home run for HSU and Cera Beasley added an RBI single and the Cowgirls scored another run on an error to make it 4-0.

The Cowgirls added a single run in the fourth when Kelsey Cogdell scored on an error. HSU but the run-rule in effect with three runs in the fifth. Beasley scored on an Amy Meyer single and throwing error by SRSU. Shelby McIntyre added a sacrifice fly and Wallace had an RBI double.

Wallace and Beasley each had two hits in the Cowgirl eight-hit attack.

In the nightcap, Sarah Shurbet started and worked two scoreless innings and Katelyn Curry relieved her and earned the win with five innings of work. She allowed 10 hits and four runs to earn her first career victory.

HSU scored three times in the second inning. Mackenzie Clay had the big hit in the innings, a two-run double and she came around to score on an error. Namey made it 4-0 on a solo home run in the third.

Clay had an RBI double in the fourth and she came around to score on a throwing error. HSU added two more runs in the sixth on a Kelsey Evans RBI single and a steal of home by Jodi Hierholzer.

HSU closed out its scoring with three runs in the seventh. Namey led off with her second home run of the game and HSU scored two runs on a Lobo error.

Namey was 4-for-4 in the game with a two home runs and Clay was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, a triple, two doubles and three runs scored.

HSU is now 5-9 on the year and 2-0 in ASC play. Sul Ross State fell to 0-12 overall and 0-2 in league play. The teams will close the series with a doubleheader on Friday at 11 a.m.
