Cowgirls Sweep Sul Ross State

ALPINE, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons' softball team picked up a road American Southwest Conference sweep at Sul Ross State winning 1-0 and 7-6 at Lady Lobo Field on Friday evening.

Game 1

Lexie Allen twirled a two-hit shutout for the Cowgirls as she walked two and struck out five to move to 4-6 on the season for the Cowgirls.

The Cowgirls' run came in the sixth inning when Ashely Brown singles and stole second and third base. She then scored on a Braleigh Middleton RBI double.

Brown had two hits for the Cowgirls and stole four bases in the game. Middleton had the other two HSU hits.

Jackie Gonzalez took the hard-luck loss as she allowed just one run on four hits to fall to 4-9 on the year.

Game 2

HSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three at-bats in the second game. Christa Garcia had a solo home run in the first inning. In the third HSU scored four times. Middleton had an RBI single, Breanna Greer stole home and Garcia and Lauren Williams also added RBI singles to make it 5-0.

Zuriah Leyva cut it to 5-2 with a two-run home run in the fifth for the Lobos and Lauren Williams responded with a solo shot to lead off the sixth and another run scored later in the inning on an error.

It stayed 7-2 until the bottom of the seventh when the Lobos scored four times and had runners on the corners when Chloe Brignac got out of the game for a save.

Genia Jones started and went three innings for the win to improve to 2-1. Lara Ammermann came on and worked three innings and allowed six run. Brignac came on with runners on in the seventh and got the final three outs.

Garcia had three of the 12 HSU hits and Williams and Greer added two hits. Leyva and Gonzales had two hits each for Sul Ross.
 

HSU is now 9-12 on the year and 6-11 in league play and Sul Ross State fell to 8-16 overall and 5-12 in ASC action.  The teams will close the series with a single game at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
