ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team dropped a doubleheader to Schreiner on Wednesday afternoon at Ellis Field, falling 4-0 and 9-0.
The first game was a pitching duel as the teams were scoreless until the seventh inning. Freshman hurler Gabby Ortega had her best outing of her young career. She went six and one-third innings before coming out with runners on the corners and one out.
Genia Salazar came in to try to shut the Mountaineers down, but Kaylee Atchley singled to right to score the first run and then Alyssa Maki followed with a three-run home run.
The Cowgirls were kept off the board by Hannah Ortiz, who improved to 5-0 on the year for Schreiner. Ortega fell to 0-5 for the Cowgirls.
Schreiner scored three runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings to take the 9-0 run-rule win in six innings. Rachel Brown had a three-run double in the first inning, Amanda Timmerman had a two-run triple in the fourth inning and Maki a two-run home run in the sixth.
The game was delayed for 45 minutes in the bottom of the first inning.
Jessica Vrana earned the win for Schreiner as she tossed five scoreless innings, scattering five hits. Lexie Allen took the loss for HSU allowing nine runs in six innings of work to fall to 0-3.
Woodyard led the Cowgirls with two hits. Maki and Rachel Brown had two hits each for Schreiner.
HSU is now 0-8 on the year and will travel to Sul Ross State this weekend for an American Southwest Conference series. Schreiner improved to 7-2-1.
