ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons senior tennis player Lisa Mertz has nabbed two awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in the organizations year-end award recognitions.
Mertz, who was the American Southwest Conference player of the year for the second time in her career, was named an All-American by the ITA. She earned that honor after reaching the ITA Small College Nationals in the fall.
The Cleburne native was also named the ITA Division III West Region Senior player of the year. The award goes to the top graduating senior in each of the four regions.
“Lisa is very deserving of these two honors,” said HSU head coach Shane Williford. “She worked extremely hard on the court, was a two-time sportsmanship award winner in the ASC, was a two-time MVP in the league and was an academic All-American. She is what we look for in student-athletes. She will go down as one of the best players in Hardin-Simmons history, if not the best.”
Mertz graduated in the spring with a nursing degree.
