Cowgirls Go 1-2 in California

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Hardin-Simmons' women's tennis trip to California got progressively better as the team went 1-2 in California with a 9-0 lost to No. 22 Bowdoin, a 6-3 loss to UC-Santa Cruz and a 6-3 win over Linfield in action this week.

The Cowgirls did not play well in the match against Bowdoin. No player won more than two games in singles and Tracy Henington and Lisa Mertz lost in a tiebreaker in doubles. All three doubles matches were close.

In the loss to Santa Cruz, the Cowgirls won at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles and most of the matches were close. Henington lost a 7-5, 7-6 match to Jessica Ruth at No. 1 singles and Lisa Mertz dropped a tough three-setter. No. 6 player Diane Crouch was the only Cowgirl to win her singles match with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

The final match of the trip was a matter of revenge for the Cowgirls as they defeated Linfield College 6-3 in another tightly contested dual. The Cowgirls lost to Linfield in the first round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

Lisa Mertz and Bria Camarillo, at No. 2 and No. 5 singles respectively, pulled out three-set victories for the Cowgirls. Both dropped the first set and battled back for the win. Jennifer Chueng won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 single, Diane Crouch continued her hot play at No. 6 singles to give the Cowgirls four of the six singles matches. HSU also won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

HSU will return to Texas on Wednesday night and then will play Rhodes College at UT-Dallas on Thursday to cap the road trip. HSU has gone 5-5 against the rugged part of their schedule, which has included three nationally ranked Division III teams and two Division II teams.
