Cowgirls Set For ASC Championships

ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons' women's track and field teams is set for the American Southwest Conference Championships that will be held Friday and Saturday in Clinton, Miss.

"We have some individuals we think are going to win their events this weekend," said head coach Rodney Smith. "We have several individuals that are right on the edge of getting into the NCAAs and with a good meet this weekend could get them over the edge."

Aaron Livingston and Martika Davis will run in the 100 and 200. Livingston has the sixth best time in the ASC this season in the 200 with a 26.07.

Lauren Rodgers has the top time in the 400 meters with a 58.12 and she will be joined by Kaitlin Roberts who has the fifth best time with a 58.61. Roberts and Jessica Thorman will also compete in the 800.

Julia Holub has the fourth-best time in the 1500 with a 5:11.96 and Thorman will also compete in the 1500. Holub will also compete in the 5000.

Jayci Shelton leads a strong hurdling contingent for the Cowgirls. She has the best time with a 14.91 in the 100 hurdles. Nicole Campbell, Rachel Allen and Halee Edwards will also run the 100 hurdles. Shelton and Edwards have the two best times in the 400 hurdles going into the event at 1:06.22 and 1:07.55 respectively. Allen will also compete in the 400 hurdles. 

The 4x100 team of Edwards, Livingston, Campbell and Shelton go in with the second-best time with a 48.83. Livingston, Edwards, Roberts and Rodgers also have the second best time in the 4x400 with a 3:56.35.

Kami Bellah, Davis and Campbell will compete in the long jump and they are all in the top seven in top marks in the league this season. Bellah also has the best mark in the high jump with a 5-4 ½. Bellah is also ranked second in the triple jump with a 36 11 ¾. Davis will also compete in the triple jump.

HSU is expected to score several points in the throwing events. Shannon Shipp will compete in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Rebecca Loney will be in the discus, hammer and javelin. Branell Falcon will be in the discus, hammer and javelin. Campbell will throw the javelin. 

Falcon won the hammer throw last year and Loney won the javelin.

Texas Lutheran is the defending league champion and Hardin-Simmons finished third last year.
